Oslo to Phnom Penh: Our Winter Travel Wishlist

If money and vacation days were no object, we’d be headed to one of these amazing destinations for a good chunk of the depressing winter season. Instead, we’ll probably just be snuggled up with Netflix and a cuppa on the couch, daydreaming longingly.

Norway
When you think of a magical winter wonderland, what comes to mind? If you say Germany, we say pssshhhh. Does Germany have bobsleighing and the Northern Lights? We think not.

The correct answer is Norway. We’ve just recently found out that it’s possible to go ice climbing on frozen waterfalls in places like Rujkan. And while we’d probably opt for the spa in the Grand Hotel Oslo instead, we’ve also always wanted to see the Aurora Borealis — so it looks like we’ll be needing all of December to explore.

Mallorca
Mallorca, the largest of the Balearic island, is populated by a plethora of almond trees: and between January and February every year they all burst gloriously into bloom. It’s like snow, except it smells nice and isn’t freezing. We’ll take it.

South Africa
Did you know that South Africa’s in the same time zone as the UK? That’s right — different hemisphere, same time zone, no jetlag.

We’ve had our eye on Capetown for some time. Not only does it boast breathtaking mountains practically stood atop sandy beaches, it’s sunny temperatures hover in the mid-20s all through December and January. Also, vineyards. Vineyards, we say!

Cambodia
Let’s see: spend Christmas dodging sweets and festooned jumpers, or watching the sunrise over the jungle temples of Angkor? We do love a good fruitcake, us, but still.

Once you’ve gotten past the 14 hour flight cost, Cambodia is highly affordable and stunningly beautiful. We’ve heard brilliant things about the the riverside capital city of Phnom Penh, most promisingly about it’s burgeoning modern food scene.

Paris
We know, it’s cliche — but Christmas in Paris sounds oh-so-romantic. And since it’s not a super popular winter tourist destination, December in this particular city means lower rates on flights and hotels. Not to mention, less crowds to fight through at the Louvre. Oui, merci.

California
It’s said in California you can go surfing in the morning and skiing in the afternoon. America, don’t you know.

Among national parks like Joshua Tree, the Sequoia National Forest and Lake Tahoe, we’re also keen to see the notorious Rose Bowl flea market in Los Angeles, as well as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Road trip, anyone?

Austria
From Innsbruck to Vienna, Austria is basically a storybook come to life. Snowboarding in the Alps? Wandering snowy streets and noshing on schnitzel? World-famous Christmas markets?! We’re in.
